Wednesday, August 5 - Our Second Spanish Class

After meeting in the cafeteria, we headed for our 8am second Spanish class. Today we learned vocabulary and phrases about family relationships. Words such as mother, father, father-in-law, brother, sister, etc. We also leared about important social occasions such as baptisms, weddings, burials, Easter, Passover, etc. One new event that I was not aware of was la quinceafiera. This is a big celeration that takes place at a girls' 15th birthday party.

We also learned about everyday language used among families such as nicknames, home, affection, story, hugs, to move from one address to another. We learned verbs for human interactions. Once again this class was 99% Spanish, with very little English.

Towards the end of the class, Zaira asked us if there was anything that we would like to see or hear for our last class. The group asked her if she would be able to put together something for us to understand classroom or social gestures. One question was why do some Hispanic students not look at you directly when you are speaking to them. We would revisit this on Thursday.
